P1

One day, Johnny was playing baseball with his neighborhood friends. He imagined marrying Anne, one of the girls on his team.

P2

Anne noticed Johnny staring at her and teased him by making a mean face.

P3

Jessica saw Anne and teased Johnny, “You’re an idiot.”

P4

Lisa played along and stuck her tongue out at him.

P5

Johnny’s insides sank to the ground. He had an icky feeling inside. His feelings were hurt. No girl would ever want to marry him! He ran home as fast as he could.

A Johnny se le cayó el alma a los pies. Sentía algo desagradable por dentro. Habían herido sus sentimientos. ¡Ninguna chica querría casarse con él! Corrió a casa tan rápido como pudo.

P6

In his room, lying on his bed, he cried.

“What’s wrong?” his dad came in and asked. “How can I help you?”

Johnny didn’t answer. He tried to speak, but he was too shy to talk about something like wanting to have a girlfriend and get married someday, even to his parents.

Johnny no respondió.
P7

Finally, Johnny shook his head and said, “No girl will ever want to marry me.”

“Did the girls tease you? Is that why you’re upset?” Dad asked. When Johnny nodded, Dad said, “Don’t let that worry you. I was like you at your age.”

“You were?” Johnny asked, surprised.

P8

“When I was in elementary school, my feelings got hurt easily. Then, as a teenager, I learned that I was more sensitive than most other people. My feelings didn’t get hurt as much after that.”

“Oh, okay.” Johnny smiled!

P9

“You are shy sometimes, because you are sensitive,” Dad explained. “You can’t help but be the way you are.”
“Okay.”

Johnny went out to play with a tingle in his chest.
